Fix a video with no audio in Premiere Pro

Does your video have sound in a player but arrive silent in Premiere Pro? Check the source file first. A supported filename does not mean Premiere supports the sound stored inside it.

  • Never uploaded
  • No watermark
  • Free

Quick answer: Drop the original video above and press "Convert to MP4" to make a copy with sound Premiere Pro can import. Download the new file and bring it into your project. The conversion is free and runs on your computer, never uploaded. If the clip already has sound in Premiere’s Source Monitor, check the timeline settings below first.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
  2. ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
  3. Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.

An MP4 can carry sound Premiere does not import

Adobe lists MP4 as a supported video file, but says the sound and picture inside must also be supported. DTS, Dolby TrueHD and Vorbis are not on its native import list. These are file-side suspects when a download plays normally elsewhere but imports without its sound.

MKV is not on Adobe's supported native import list either. Make a real MP4 from the original MKV; changing the extension alone leaves the same unsupported file underneath.

Convert the source, then import it again

Use the original recording or download above. The tool makes its sound in a form Adobe lists for import and keeps an already compatible picture unchanged where possible. Other pictures are converted. Save the MP4 with a distinct name, then import it as a new clip and check it in the Source Monitor.

Sound that needs the slower backup path limits the result to about 1 GB. The conversion keeps only the main sound track. If you need separate voices or several recorded tracks, keep the original for your editing workflow.

Sound in the Source Monitor, but not the sequence?

That points to Premiere's setup. Check audio source patching and track targeting when adding the clip, and make sure the timeline track is not muted. In Preferences or Settings, open Audio Hardware and check the output device. If all clips are silent, check that output before converting more files.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. Save the converted copy straight to your device. How it works.

Questions

Should I convert a WAV that Premiere cannot hear?

Adobe supports WAV audio. Check whether it plays outside Premiere and whether the correct output is selected. A new MP4 is meant for a video whose sound format is the problem.

Does this repair a recording made with the microphone off?

No. It changes an existing sound track into a different format. It cannot create missing speech or recover sound that was never saved.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
