VLC converted my video to MP4 with no sound

A common VLC problem: you convert an AVI, VOB, MTS, WMV or other video to MP4 and the result plays silent, or not at all on a phone. Here is why, and a converter that keeps the sound.

  • Never uploaded
  • No size limit
  • No watermark
  • Free

Quick answer: To convert a video to MP4 with its sound, drop the file into the tool at the top of this page and press "Convert to MP4". iLoveAudioVideo does the work in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
  2. ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
  3. Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.

Why VLC's MP4 is silent

  • The original sound is surround, as on DVDs, camcorders and many films. VLC's default MP4 profile writes MP3 sound, which holds only two channels, so the conversion often fails and writes no sound at all.
  • The player does not read MP3 sound inside an MP4. Some players and editors expect the standard MP4 sound format and play anything else silent.
  • The sound track was turned off in the profile's audio settings, so nothing was written.

Fix it here instead

Drop the original file (not VLC's silent MP4) into the converter above. It writes MP4 with the sound in the standard format every phone, computer and editor plays, deinterlaces camcorder and DVD video, and keeps widescreen DVDs at the right shape. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

Or fix it in VLC

In Convert / Save, pick the MP4 profile and click the wrench icon to edit it. On the audio tab, tick Audio, choose MPEG 4 Audio and save. Then convert again from the original file.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Online video tools upload your file to their servers, process it there, and send it back. That is slow for big videos and costs them money for every minute, so free plans cap your file size or add watermarks, and your video sits on someone else's computer.

Here your own computer does the work, inside this tab. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to cap: no file size limit, no daily limit and no watermark.
