Fix an MKV with no sound on your TV

Picture on the TV, but no voices or music? An MKV from a film rip may carry surround sound your TV cannot play. Make an MP4 here, then copy it back to your USB drive.

Quick answer: To fix an MKV with no sound on your TV, drop it above and press "Convert to MP4". The tool changes unsupported sound into a kind smart TVs play. Download the MP4, copy it to USB and try it on the TV. It is free and runs in your browser, without uploading. The slower backup path handles results up to about 1 GB.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
  2. ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
  3. Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.

Why Samsung and LG TVs can play the picture only

Many recent Samsung and LG TVs dropped DTS playback. Samsung says DTS is available only on models released before 2018. LG confirms that its 2020 TVs do not support DTS. Check your model's manual: support on other LG years varies.

DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD surround tracks from film rips are common culprits. A TV accepting an MKV does not mean it can play every kind of sound inside. Open the same file in VLC on a computer. If you hear it there, the sound exists; the TV's sound-format support is the likely problem.

Make a copy for the TV

Choose the original MKV above. Its sound is converted for MP4 playback. When the picture is already in the most common video format, it is usually copied unchanged; footage that needs picture changes is converted too. Download the result, put it on your USB drive and select the new MP4 on the TV.

Size limit: DTS, DTS-HD and TrueHD sound usually need the slower backup path. It handles results up to about 1 GB, so a large film rip may be too big.

When the file is not the cause

If other videos are silent too, check the TV's volume and audio output settings. Try the TV speakers. Sound there but not through a soundbar points to the connection or output settings. HDMI eARC and soundbar passthrough depend on what both devices support; converting a file cannot fix that setup.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. Save the converted copy straight to your device. How it works.

Questions

Will changing .mkv to .mp4 fix USB playback?

No. Renaming changes the filename, not the picture or sound inside. Use the converter to make an actual MP4.

Does this keep every language track?

Only the main sound track is kept. Check that the downloaded copy has the language you want before taking it back to the TV.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
