Quick answer: To convert MP4 to AVI, drop the MP4 into the tool at the top of this page and press "Convert to AVI". The picture is made up to 1280×720 with MP3 sound, chosen so players and older software that read AVI can play it. It happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The file gets larger.

Made for players that read AVI
The AVI is made in a form that DVD and TV players and older software that read AVI are built for: a picture up to 1280×720 and MP3 sound. If your player opens MP4 already, you do not need this.
Expect a bigger file and some waiting
The video is made again, not repackaged. Our 20-second 720p sample took 9 to 13 seconds and the AVI was 11 MB. Longer videos take longer.
It may not preview here
Browsers often cannot play AVI, so the preview in the page may stay blank. Download the file and open it in a player; that works.
Measured, not promised
Measured on 21 Oct 2026 in Chrome on a 2019 Intel MacBook (an older laptop) with a 20-second 720p sample. Longer videos take longer; real files vary. More results.
Why your video never leaves your computer
Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. That is why there is no size limit and no watermark. How it works.
Questions
Will it lose quality?
