Convert VTT to SRT

Got a WebVTT file that your video editor or player will not open? Turn it into an SRT file here. It happens on your own computer, and many files can go at once.

 • Never uploaded
 • No sign-up
 • Many files at once
 • Free

Use a positive number if the subtitles show too early, a negative one if too late. Example: 2.5 or -1.

Quick answer: To convert VTT to SRT, drop the .vtt file into the tool at the top of this page and download the .srt file. The captions and times stay the same; the header, voice names and styling that SRT cannot hold are dropped. It happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up.

How it works

 1. Drop your VTT filesOne or many, with or without hours in the times.
 2. Check "Convert to"It is set to SRT. Type a number of seconds in the shift box only if the times are off.
 3. DownloadEach SRT file, or all of them in one ZIP.

What SRT cannot hold

An SRT file is only numbered captions with times, so a few things in a VTT file have nowhere to go:

 • Voice names such as <v Anna> are dropped, and with them the name of the speaker. If you need names, add them to the lines by hand afterwards.
 • Position and alignment settings after the times, such as line, position and align, are dropped. Every caption sits where the player puts captions.
 • The header, style and note blocks at the top and between captions are dropped.
 • Timestamps inside a line (word-by-word timing) and class names are dropped, but the words stay.

Italic, bold and underline are kept. Symbols written as & or < are turned back into the characters & and <.

What the SRT looks like

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500
Welcome back to the show.

Captions are numbered from 1, in order, and the milliseconds follow a comma. If the VTT had cues out of order or empty ones, the SRT has them sorted and the empty ones left out.

Where an SRT works

SRT is the file video editors and players ask for: Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut on a computer, VLC and YouTube all open it. If you only need the VTT to play on a web page, you do not need to convert it. To go the other way, use SRT to VTT.

Questions

Will I lose the speaker names?

Yes, if the VTT has them as voice tags. SRT has no place for them, so the tag and the name are dropped and the words stay.

Why does my editor not open the VTT?

Many video editors expect SRT. Convert the file here and import the SRT instead.

Does it keep the line breaks?

Yes, each caption keeps its lines.
