Convert GIF to MP4
An MP4 holds the same animation as a GIF in a fraction of the size. Drop a GIF here and get an MP4 made on your own computer, without uploading it.

Quick answer: To convert a GIF to MP4, drop the GIF into the tool at the top of this page and press "Convert to MP4". The animation keeps its picture and timing, and the MP4 has no sound because a GIF has none. It happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

How it works
- Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
- ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
- Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.
Why the MP4 is so much smaller
A GIF stores nearly every frame as a picture of its own and is limited to 256 colours. An MP4 stores only what changes from one frame to the next. We made a GIF of an 8-second clip, 480 pixels wide at 12 frames a second: it was 4.7 MB. The MP4 of the same animation was 0.1 MB. Your GIF will differ, but a large GIF usually shrinks a lot.
Where an MP4 helps
A page full of GIFs loads slowly; the same animations as short MP4s load much faster and can be paused. Some places accept video but not GIF files.
Things to know
- The MP4 has no sound, because a GIF has none.
- The MP4 does not loop by itself in a video player. On a web page, add the loop setting; chat apps that show it as a looping clip do it themselves.
- Want to go the other way? Video to GIF turns part of a video into a GIF.
Measured, not promised
Measured on 21 Oct 2026 in Chrome on a 2019 Intel MacBook (an older laptop) with an 8-second animated GIF made from a moving test picture. Real GIFs differ, and a longer or larger GIF takes longer. More results.
Why your video never leaves your computer
Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. That is why there is no size limit and no watermark. How it works.
Questions
Will the animation look the same?
Yes: the frames and their timing are kept. The MP4 can show smoother colour than the GIF, which is limited to 256.
Does it work with a GIF from a chat app?
Yes, if you have the .gif file saved on your computer.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
