Compress a video for WhatsApp

WhatsApp refuses videos that are too big and shrinks the rest on its own. Compress it here first, on your computer, and you choose the size and the quality.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoMP4, MOV, WEBM or MKV, any size. It stays on your computer.
  2. Choose how"Smaller, same look" for a big saving without visible loss, or an exact size such as 10 MB. You see the result before you start.
  3. DownloadPreview the result, then save it. Exact sizes are checked before you download.

Which size to pick

WhatsApp's limit for videos depends on your app and connection, and WhatsApp's own help pages give different numbers. 16 MB is the size that its help pages say works on every phone and computer, so it is the default here. Newer versions of WhatsApp on iPhone accept larger videos; if yours does, pick a larger size for a sharper result.

What fits in 16 MB: a one-minute clip comes out at about 670p, a three-minute clip at about 380p. Shorter is sharper, so trim long videos to the part you want to share.

Sending from your computer

This tool runs on a computer, which suits WhatsApp Web and the WhatsApp desktop app: compress the video here, then attach the result in your chat. Nothing is uploaded on the way; the only upload is when you send it on WhatsApp.

Want the full quality instead?

WhatsApp makes videos smaller when you send them as a video. Sending the file as a document keeps it exactly as it is, and WhatsApp allows documents up to 2 GB. The other person then has to download it before they can watch it.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Online video tools upload your file to their servers, process it there, and send it back. That is slow for big videos and costs them money for every minute, so free plans cap your file size or add watermarks, and your video sits on someone else's computer.

Here your own computer does the work, inside this tab. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to cap: no file size limit, no daily limit and no watermark.

Questions

Why does WhatsApp say my video is too long?

The file is bigger than WhatsApp accepts. Compress it here to 16 MB, or trim it to a shorter part first.

Will WhatsApp still compress my video?

It may shrink it again a little, but a video that is already small and sharp holds up much better than a large one shrunk by WhatsApp.

Is it really free?

Yes. Your computer does the work, so a video costs us nothing to process. No account, no watermark, no limits.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.

Which browsers work?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari on a computer. Chrome and Edge are fastest on most machines. Phones work for short videos.

How long does it take?

In Chrome, a one-minute 1080p video took 13–19 seconds on the laptops we tested and about 40 seconds on a computer without a graphics chip. Safari can be slower.

Can I close the tab while it works?

Keep the tab open and in front until it finishes. Browsers slow down background tabs.
