Fix an MP4 with no sound in QuickTime

An MP4 downloaded from the web can show its picture in QuickTime Player while the sound stays silent. If the same download has sound in VLC, try changing the sound format here.

Quick answer: To fix an MP4 with unsupported sound in QuickTime, drop it above and press "Convert to MP4". Save the new copy and open it in QuickTime Player. The tool converts nonstandard sound and copies an already compatible picture where possible. It is free, works in your browser and never uploads the video.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
  2. ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
  3. Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.

Why a web download can be silent on a Mac

MP4 is a file type, not a promise about the sound inside. Downloaded web videos can carry Opus or Vorbis sound. QuickTime playback failures with those formats are reported on macOS Sonoma, even when another player can hear the file. Support can depend on your macOS version.

Do not assume every surround track is unsupported. AC-3 can work in modern QuickTime Player, so its presence alone is not a reason to convert. Check the same MP4 in VLC to separate a playback problem from a recording with no usable sound.

Save an MP4 QuickTime can hear

Choose the silent MP4 above. The conversion replaces Opus, Vorbis and other nonstandard sound with the usual MP4 sound. Already compatible sound is kept as it is. The picture is copied when it is already suitable; otherwise it is converted too. Open the downloaded copy rather than the old file from your recent-items list.

If your browser cannot read the sound, a slower backup path handles the conversion. Its result limit is about 1 GB. Conversion keeps the main sound track, rather than every language track.

If every QuickTime movie is silent

Check QuickTime's volume control and the Mac's Sound settings. Select the speakers or headphones you are actually using, and turn off mute. A connected display or Bluetooth device may be taking the sound. Converting a movie does not change the Mac's output device.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. Save the converted copy straight to your device. How it works.

Questions

Can I listen without converting the video?

Yes. If VLC or IINA plays the original with sound, you can use that player instead. Convert when you want a copy for QuickTime.

Will a new filename alone fix QuickTime?

No. Renaming an MP4 does not change its sound. Keep the original and open the separate file downloaded after conversion.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
