Where .opus files come from
An .opus file is sound saved in the Opus format. Voice-note apps and some recorders save it. Two common cases have their own pages, with steps for getting the file out of the app: WhatsApp voice notes and Telegram voice messages.
Small files grow a little
Opus is very economical, especially for speech. Our one-minute voice recording was 0.24 MB as Opus and 1.4 MB as MP3 at "Very good". "Good" is plenty for speech and makes a smaller file.
Measured, not promised
Measured on 21 Oct 2026 in Chrome on a 2019 Intel MacBook (an older laptop) with one minute of spoken sound and one minute of a music-like mix, both saved as Opus. Newer computers are faster; real files vary. More results.
