WAV gets much smaller
WAV stores sound uncompressed, so it is large. In the video the sound is saved in a compact form: our 20-second WAV sample became a 324 KB MP4. If you only want a smaller sound file and no video, use WAV to MP3.
Why put a recording in a video
Some places take only video files. A podcast clip, a voice recording or a demo track can go there as an MP4 with a black screen or a cover picture. Choose the picture before you start; without one the screen stays black.
Keep your WAV
Your WAV is not changed. The MP4 is a new file made from it, so keep the WAV if you need the full-size recording for editing later.

Measured on 21 Oct 2026 in Chrome on a 2019 Intel MacBook (an older laptop) with a 20-second sample. Newer computers are faster; real files vary. More results.
