Compress an MP3 file
Pick a lower quality and an MP3 shrinks in seconds: a one-hour talk at "Speech and podcasts" quality comes out at about 43 MB. You see the new size before you start, and the file never leaves your computer.

Quick answer: To make an MP3 smaller, drop the file into the tool at the top of this page and press "Convert to MP3". iLoveAudioVideo does the work in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no file size limit.

How it works
- Drop your audio fileM4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG and more, any length. It stays on your computer.
- Pick the quality"Very good" suits speech and most music; "Best" for music you care about.
- Download the MP3Plays on every phone, computer, car stereo and audio editor.
How small each quality makes it
| Quality | Per minute | One hour | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice | 0.5 MB | 29 MB | Voice notes, dictation |
| Speech and podcasts | 0.7 MB | 43 MB | Talks, lectures, podcasts |
| Good | 1 MB | 58 MB | Background music |
| Very good | 1.4 MB | 86 MB | Most music |
| Best | 2.4 MB | 144 MB | Music you care about |
Stereo or mono, the size per minute is the same at each quality.
Any audio file, not just MP3
WAV, M4A, FLAC and OGG files work too and come out as smaller MP3s. A one-hour, 635 MB WAV recording became an 86 MB MP3 in about a minute in our tests.
Picking a higher quality does not help
An MP3 that was made small cannot get its detail back: choosing a higher quality than the original only makes the file bigger. The tool shows the new size before you start, so you can see when it will not save anything.

Why your audio never leaves your computer
Online converters upload your file to their servers, convert it there and send it back. That is slow for long recordings, so free plans cap the length or the number of files, and your recording sits on someone else's computer.
Here your own computer does the work, inside this tab. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to cap: no length limit, no daily limit and no sign-up.
Questions
Will it sound worse?
Speech stays clear even at "Voice". With music, the lowest settings lose some detail you may hear on good headphones, so use "Good" or above.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is compressed inside your browser and saved straight back to your computer.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.
Is it really free?
Yes. Your computer does the work, so a file costs us nothing to convert. No account and no limits.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is converted inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
Which browsers work?
Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari on a computer.
Can I use a video file?
Yes. Drop a video and you get its sound.
