Quick answer: To convert M4A to WAV, drop the M4A file into the tool at the top of this page and press "Convert to WAV". You get a standard 16-bit WAV with the same sample rate and channels. It happens in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, with no sign-up and no file size limit.

Expect about eleven times the size
An M4A is compressed; a WAV is not. A one-minute voice memo of ours was 0.97 MB as M4A and 10.6 MB as WAV. The WAV does not sound better, because what the M4A left out cannot come back. What you get is a file that editors, samplers and older software open without a plugin.
Why not MP3?
If you only need something small that plays everywhere, M4A to MP3 gives a file that is about seven times smaller than the WAV. Choose WAV when the next program asks for it or when you will edit and save the sound several times.
Measured, not promised
Measured on 21 Oct 2026 in Chrome on a 2019 Intel MacBook (an older laptop) with one minute of spoken sound saved as M4A. Newer computers are faster; real files vary. More results.
Why your audio never leaves your computer
Your audio is converted by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. That is why there is no length limit and no sign-up. How it works.
Questions
Does converting lose quality?
No further loss happens: the WAV holds exactly the sound the M4A plays.
Can I convert a video as well?
Yes. The same tool takes the sound from MP4 and MOV videos.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is converted inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
Can I use a video file?
Yes. Drop a video and you get its sound.
