Fix a video with no audio in DaVinci Resolve

A clip with a picture but no audio waveform can have sound Resolve does not read. First play the original outside Resolve. If you hear it, try a converted copy before changing your project.

  • Never uploaded
  • No watermark
  • Free

Quick answer: On Windows or Mac, drop the video above and press "Convert to MP4" to make a copy with sound DaVinci Resolve supports. Download it and import the new file. It is free, without uploading. This MP4 fix will not solve the AAC sound limitation in free Resolve on Linux; use the WAV workaround below instead.

How it works

  1. Drop your videoThe file is read on your computer, never uploaded.
  2. ConvertMany videos convert in seconds with no quality loss; the rest are converted at high quality.
  3. Download the MP4Plays on Windows, Android, iPhone, Mac and every website.

Which files need a different kind of sound?

DTS, Dolby TrueHD and Vorbis are worth checking in film downloads and web recordings: they are not in Blackmagic's supported audio list. An MP4 or MKV name alone tells you little about the sound. Hear it in VLC but see no waveform after importing? A file-format mismatch is a likely cause.

Not every unfamiliar sound format is a problem. Blackmagic lists AC-3 on Mac and leaves its Windows support to the operating system. Uncompressed camera sound is also supported. Check the sound in the original before converting.

Import a converted copy on Windows or Mac

The tool above makes MP4 sound in the standard form Resolve reads on Windows and Mac. It copies an already compatible picture where possible and converts other pictures at high quality. Save the result under a new name and import that copy into the media pool.

Files with surround sound the browser cannot read use a slower backup path, with a result limit of about 1 GB. Only the main sound track is kept, so this is not a way to preserve separate microphone and game tracks.

The Linux exception: use a WAV beside the video

Free DaVinci Resolve on Linux does not decode AAC, the standard sound in our MP4 output. Converting to MP4 here will not fix that. Use the WAV converter, which also accepts MP4 videos, to save the sound separately. Import the WAV and place it under the video on the timeline. The video itself must already be readable by your Linux edition of Resolve.

A waveform but nothing in your headphones?

Check Resolve's audio output device and playback settings, then look for a muted track or disabled clip audio. If every clip is silent, the output setup is a better place to start. Converting cannot undo a mute setting or restore audio that was never recorded.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Your video is processed by your own computer, inside this tab, and never uploaded. Save the converted copy straight to your device. How it works.

Questions

Does no waveform always mean the recording is silent?

No. Resolve may not have decoded its sound. Play the original in another player to check before replacing or deleting it.

Will this change my Resolve project?

No. You download a new video file and import it yourself. Your original clip and project stay on your computer.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Choose or drop several files together. They are converted one after another with the same settings, and you can download each one or all of them in one ZIP.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.
