How long a video fits in 8 MB

Picture sizes the tool picks for a 1080p phone video (≈ means about; soft means visibly blurry):

LengthWith soundNo sound
15 sec≈960p≈980p
30 sec≈670p≈690p
1 min≈460p≈490p
2 min≈320p, soft≈340p, soft
3 min≈250p, soft≈280p, soft
5 min≈180p, soft≈210p, soft

Up to about a minute looks good. Past two minutes the picture gets soft, so trim the video first if you can.

Still compressing to 8 MB for Discord?

You no longer need to. Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB since August 2026, according to Discord's File Attachments FAQ. Older guides still say 8 MB. Use the Discord compressor, which aims for 20 MB, and your clip keeps more than twice the detail.

Why Windows shows 7.6 MB

8 MB here means 8,000,000 bytes, and the tool keeps the file a little under it. Windows counts in steps of 1,024, so it shows that file as about 7.6 MB, while a Mac shows 8 MB. Both are the same file, and it fits an 8 MB limit either way.

Why your video never leaves your computer

Online video tools upload your file to their servers, process it there, and send it back. That is slow for big videos and costs them money for every minute, so free plans cap your file size or add watermarks, and your video sits on someone else's computer.

Here your own computer does the work, inside this tab. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to cap: no file size limit, no daily limit and no watermark.

Questions

Can I pick another size?

Yes. Use one of the presets, or type any size in MB.

Will the file be under 8 MB?

The tool aims a little under it and checks the finished file before you download. If it cannot get under 8 MB, it tells you.

Is it really free?

Yes. Your computer does the work, so a video costs us nothing to process. No account, no watermark, no limits.

Is my video uploaded?

No. It is processed inside this browser tab and saved straight back to your computer.

Which browsers work?

Recent Chrome, Edge and Safari on a computer. Chrome and Edge are fastest on most machines. Phones work for short videos.

How long does it take?

In Chrome, a one-minute 1080p video took 13–19 seconds on the laptops we tested and about 40 seconds on a computer without a graphics chip. Safari can be slower.

Can I close the tab while it works?

Keep the tab open and in front until it finishes. Browsers slow down background tabs.
